Farewell and Welcome!

As we prepare for the upcoming osprey season, we are saying both farewell and welcome to some very important people in the Loch of the Lowes team- wonderful volunteers.

Over the winter we have had three volunteer residential winter wildlife assistants who have helped out both the visitor centre and the ranger. As well as helping with the day to day running of the place, they’ve been getting their hands dirty with reserve maintenance and doing lots of preparation for our very busy upcoming season of events- if you come to any of our great variety of family activity days this spring and summer, or guided walks, you’ll be benefitting from their hard work. So is it with some sadness we say a BIG THANKYOU and farewell to Chantal, Amelia and Sara and wish them the very best of luck in their conservation careers.

Thank you!
Thank you!
“Volunteering with the Scottish Wildlife Trust at Loch of the Lowes has been a great experience and I am very grateful that I have had the opportunity to work alongside such amazing people!
I have thoroughly enjoyed helping out over the winter, especially with updating the weekly osprey satellite tracking data and digitising osprey behaviour from last year. Working in the visitor centre and creating posters, crafts and trails for the upcoming events was also great fun! As for the more outdoors activities, I will definitely miss doing maintenance on the various Perthshire reserves (they are stunning, check them out!) and the daily recording of wildlife. I loved seeing Goosanders, Water rail, Yellowhammer, Brambling, Redpoll, Fallow deer and of course the Red Squirrels!
Although winter has come and gone; Osprey season is starting and I certainly hope to visit and enjoy seeing the spectacular reserves and wildlife in the different seasons to come!
To everyone at Loch of the Lowes, thank you!

“I consider myself very fortunate for volunteering with the Scottish Wildlife Trust in Loch of the Lowes, it has been a great experience thanks to ranger Emma, the staff and volunteers. Like a migratory bird, I arrived late in winter and stayed by the Loch for a while, migrating again at the end of the term. But my nest is not far away, as the experience I got in Loch of the Lowes helped me to find a job in conservation. I have enjoyed every minute spent as Winter Ranger Assistant, learning about the Scottish wildlife, visiting the reserves and helping at the Visitor Centre where I could see many different species such as chaffinches, bramblings, siskins, redpolls, woodpeckers or red squirrels. My favourite birds where in the loch, though, goldeneye and great crested grebes performing the courtship display, beautiful. Seeing the aurora borealis from the hides is a unique experience I will never forget and I even loved my work in the office, researching, entering data and drawing red squirrels for the exhibition! I am sure I will come back to see the ospreys this season because… who wouldn’t?  SARA “
