Blue 44

Our young Osprey Blue 44 is still happily settled in Southern France and has continued to favour the north and east side of Etang Blanc and Etang d’Hardy, the lakes he has chosen to settle on. Life must be good on these, especially as the area is so similar to his birthplace here in Scotland. We think only a very cold snap which made fishing untenable would persuade him to move on now this winter , towards Africa.

This young osprey was moving west along the Mauritania/ Senegal border, but has decided to do another loop and return to a favorite perch in a bend of the Senegal river. In fact this loop was more of a figure of eight, and the roost he returned to now has 13 satellite data points in the last few days- he certainly seems to like it!

The furthest west he travelled on his latest wandering was only 50 miles from the coast, near the town of “Richard Toll”, and the total loop was some 80 miles or so. This area is  more fertile agricultural land, with many tributaries and fertile plains of fields.  At all times though he is near the big river which must have plentiful fishing: we wonder exactly what he is eating?

Whether or not he continues west toward the lake where Dyfi Osprey Project’s young osprey “Ceulan” has settled , will be interesting – their staff and ours certainly hope so.
