Fabulous news: our young Osprey Blue 44 is making great strides on his first migration south.  Overnight he reached Kent and roosted just north of Gillingham. At 6am this morning he was still there, perhaps contemplating the next big push: crossing the English Channel. Such seas crossings are amongst the most hazardous elements of the ospreys migration journey so let’s all hope he is makes it ok.

Interestingly, last night’s roost is within a few miles of RSPB Cliffe Pools reserve, one of south east England’s most important wetland sites – an ideal place for a spot of fishing and recuperation. So perhaps Blue 44 will take a rest day before his crossing, waiting for good winds, or he might just go for it- we’ll have to wait a couple more days to see.

Our young bird is probably not going to set any records and certainly isn’t going to equal “Alba’s” recent record 2 weeks for the journey. However, it is completely normal for them to stop and rest along the way- to rest, and feed up, particularly after especially long flights or in bad weather.
