Events from the nest:

Our Osprey pair have not been seen at the nest today but there have been several sightings of an Osprey perched in trees previously favoured by our male bird. The bird has been seen carrying sticks to another area of the Loch – this behaviour is sometimes witnessed when a nest has failed and a ‘frustration’ nest build is attempted.

We will be monitoring this behaviour and attempt to ascertain whether this bird is our resident male.

Other Wildlife at Loch of the Lowes:

Today on the loch there were three mute swans, thirty four mallards, eleven goosander, two oystercatchers and seven great crested grebes, one of which was carrying a chick on her back, and another adult was being followed around by four juveniles.

At the feeding station there were two pheasants, a robin, two blue tits, two coal tits, twenty eight chaffinch, four greenfinch, five siskins and two red squirrels.

Conservation work and sightings on the Perthshire reserves:

Today the conservation team were on Keltneyburn carrying out bracken control and a species survey. During the survey we found thirty one plant species with harebell, devils bit scabious and knapweed giving the meadow a very blue/ purple look.

The yellow blooms of tormentil and birds-foot trefoil are still showing well and add to the array of colour as we approach the end of the summer season.

We also saw one peacock butterfly and several green veined whites in the grassland; around the pond area of the reserve we saw the common blue, red and emerald damselflies.

On the hill top overlooking the reserve three buzzards were seen circling on the thermals.
