Wildlife Blog 6th June 2011
Good afternoon all,
Events at the nest today:
A somewhat unsettled day for our osprey pair, incubation has been intermittent, with the female taking the occasional extended break from incubation duty. The male has been busy bringing in more nest material and chasing away potential threats such as a group of black-headed gulls. A fish arrived at the nest at 01:48pm, clutched in the talons of the male. The female then took it off the nest to eat elsewhere.

Other Wildlife at Loch of the Lowes:
On the water of the loch today were; ten Canada geese, twenty-five mallard, six mute swans and four great crested grebes. The squealing, piglet-like call of the elusive water rail could be heard coming from the reeds on the western shore of the loch. Around fifty black-headed gulls could be seen on and over the loch today. This has contributed to our osprey pair’s agitation throughout the day.
At the viewing window, sixteen chaffinches, four coal tits, two blue tits, two great tits, six siskins, two yellowhammers, seven greenfinches, five pheasant, three great spotted woodpeckers and a reed bunting were recorded. A total of three red squirrels were seen in the area as well today.
