Morning folks,

Its another cold morning here today with a heavy frost on the ground.

Whilst opening up the hides I spotted a group of a dozen or so Goldeneye occupying the small patch of open water on the far side of the loch.

Unusually for ducks, these medium-sized birds with distinctly triangular shaped heads and  ‘golden’ eyes nest in trees (and in some cases specially designed nestboxes) throughout the Highlands.

At this time of year their numbers are swelled with birds from Northern Europe and they can be seen on lakes, large rivers and sheltered coasts, particularly in north and west Britain. They are diving ducks that depending on location will feed on mussels, insect larvae, small fish and plants.

Just seen a red squirrel on the feeder cam – there seems to be at least one individual making regular visits now. Lets hope he encourages some of his friends to visit as well!
