Loch of the Lowes Wildlife Blog 19th January 2011
Greeting all,
Well its not quite so chilly today, probably due to the grey cloud overhead. The shorts and t-shirt are definitely staying in the wardrobe for now though.
With the slight rise in temperature recently, Charlotte has decided to give the bird feeders a good clean. Regular cleaning of feeders, bird baths & all feeding surfaces is vital in preventing the potential spread of harmful parasites & bacteria. Lack of good hygiene at bird feeding sites can lead to disease outbreaks such as Trichomonosis, which has had a particularly severe impact on greenfinches & chaffinches in certain parts of the UK.
On a lighter note, I had to laugh at two mallard drakes who were locked in bill-to-bill combat when I arrived this morning. Whether they were fighting over a female or feeding rights I don’t know. Needless to say this kind of behavior will become increasingly common as the breeding season gets into full swing.
Have a good day,
Jonathan
