New Seasonal Ranger arrives on Isle of Eigg

The Scottish Wildlife Trust has appointed Gillian Gibson as Seasonal Ranger on the Isle of Eigg.

Gillian GIbson
Gillian is just the third person to hold the post in over 30 years.

Gillian is just the third person to hold the position in more than 30 years, following the retirement of John ‘The Bird’ Chester in 2015.

She is responsible for running a programme of events including guided walks and talks, and organising wildlife monitoring on the island. Her work is supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

She said: “My first thought on arriving on Eigg was how big such a small island can be! Although only approximately five miles long and three miles wide the variety of habitats and landscape features means there are plenty of areas to explore.”

“This is a really exciting year to be working on the island and I’m looking forward to helping residents and visitors discover the amazing range of wildlife that can be found here.”

Clara Govier, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “The Isle of Eigg is an inspirational place with a community that has really embraced sustainable living. Our players can be proud that by supporting the work of the island’s ranger they are helping local people and visitors to learn about and protect a wide range of incredible wildlife.”

The Isle of Eigg boasts a diverse range of wildlife including Arctic alpine wild flowers, otters and hundreds of bird species.

An Sgurr, Isle of Eigg

2017 marks the 20th anniversary of the community buyout of the island by the Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust, a partnership between the Scottish Wildlife Trust, residents of Eigg and The Highland Council. The purchase was made possible thanks to a public appeal, which raised over £1 million.

Maggie Fyffe, Secretary of the Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust, said: “The community has welcomed the arrival of Gillian and we are all looking forward to working with her over the summer.”
