One of my favourite woodland birds is the jay – a right woodland dandy!

These birds are surprisingly shy and are often heard rather than seen, though their call could easily be confused with a banshee.

A typical view of a jay is a white rump, with black sides, disappearing off into the woodland in a dipping flight. If you’re lucky, you may get to watch one and see the amazing colours that make this corvid so different from the mix of black and grey that other members of the crow family are made up of.

But don’t take my word for it: go for a jay walk to see for your self! The best path to take for a chance of seeing these colourful crows is the blue route.
