Falls of Clyde Highlight of the Week: Caught on Camera
The most amazing thing happened this week. I actually caught badgers on our trail cameras. I’m so excited.
I found a spot where it was obvious that some badger activity was going on. You could easily see the path outside the set entrance and a lot of bedding had been dumped outside the entrance as well. I put the cameras out there twice. First time around I didn’t catch anything. This time my expectations were high but still I knew there were a great chance I wouldn’t catch anything. And as you can tell from the title… I did catch badgers!
If you went to one of our badger watches this summer these two badgers will be some of the badgers you would have seen on those trips. Probably some of the badgers that were young this summer and has now grown up.
The trail cameras that we used are getting a bit old. The ones you can get today will switch on almost immediately and film for however long you want them to. The two cameras we have will switch on 30 seconds after it has detected movement. This means that the animal might get away before the cameras turn on. That’s one reason I’m so excited I actually caught them this time.
At night time the cameras use infrared light. The animals are not supposed to notice and shouldn’t be able to either but in some of the footage you can see that they have definitely noticed the camera.
We hope to get some better ones in the future and thereby catch some more animals.
