Blue YD – and he’s off! 13th Sept

Further to the earlier news on Blue 44 we can now reveal that Blue YD began his first migration yesterday!

Setting off from his nest location in Angus yesterday morning, he made rapid progress, reaching southern Cumbria by 3pm in the afternoon when we last received a fix.

It is interesting to note that so far he is flying due south, compared to Blue 44’s more south-easterly track. From other tracking studies conducted to date, it appears that young birds tend to head in a more south-south westerly direction on their first migration. We’ll have to wait for tomorrow’s data to see if he continues on this path.

You can view his journey so far on the tracking page
