Transport your students or group members to the wilds of Scotland with our Words of the Wild resources and lesson plans!
We’re inviting your class or group to explore Scotland’s rich natural and literary heritage. We’ve selected some of our favourite passages from Scottish nature writing old and new, and want to encourage young readers to engage with them through art, writing or debate. And with a quote from Robert Burns in the mix, it’s a great way to celebrate Burns Day!
Our resource pack contains everything you need to run a session, with a range of quotes to choose from and a selection of activities that can be chosen based on the age/ability of your class or group.
At the end of the session, simply tell us which quote your students found the most inspiring and you will be entered into a prize draw to win a £200 NHBS voucher and a year’s subscription to British Wildlife for your school or group.
A note for teachers and youth workers:
Participating in these sessions offers a great way to meet the objectives of the Scottish Studies Award. It can:
- Support Language and Literature objectives, including analysis and creative writing in a Scottish context.
- Tie into Society and Environment topics, like biodiversity and Scotland’s landscapes.
- Encourage personal reflection on Scotland’s natural heritage and identity.
- Help students develop planning, research, and reflection skills.
This fun, cross-curricular activity will help students engage with Scotland’s rich natural and literary heritage while supporting their coursework.
Resource pack
We’ve designed three session plans, with accompanying resources, for your class or group. Each session is designed to be an hour long, and can be customised to suit the young people you work with.
The three sessions have different aims:
- Nature drawing
- Creative writing
- Literary analysis and debate
Please choose the session which resonates with you the most. In the session, your class or group will engage with samples of Scottish nature writing, and vote on which one they find the most inspiring.
You can find a list of Scottish nature quotes to use in your sessions here.
Submit your class or group’s chosen quote using the form below before 28 February 2025 to enter the prize draw. Prizes will be distributed in March 2025.
