Here we are in Autumn with increasingly short hours of daylight between rosy dawns and glorious golden sunsets – when it’s not stormy, that is!  We hope you are safe and well and have not been too badly affected by Storm Babet.

When dusk falls and we retreat to our electrically lit homes, spare a thought for the wide range of wildlife just emerging to go about their lives in darkness.

What are these creatures doing in the dark? How do they manage to hunt or forage and do they all remain active in the freezing mid-winter?

Creatures of the Night- Event

Staff and volunteers at Lowes are busy organising activities to highlight the wealth of nocturnal creatures who are out and about in the long, dark nights ahead. From foxes to badgers, mice to owls, they all have different habits and, of course, with Hallowe’en on the horizon – what are bats up to?

Saturday 28^th October – Creatures of the Night. Bats in Scotland are a fascinating subject and we’re delighted expert bat ecologist Jean Oudney at Lowes on 28^th October will present a talk and answer questions on all things ‘Bat’. She will also be bringing some amazing bat specimens, allowing a rare opportunity for a close and safe inspection of these incredible flying mammals.

The Bat Talk is aimed mainly for adults, starting at 2.30pm in the Crannog Hide (booking essential due to space) While, throughout the afternoon, there will be quizzes, mask making and games (including an echolocation game) for children of all ages (adults too – don’t be shy!)

Children – why not visit us in your Hallowe’en costumes! We would love to see your imaginative creations!
