Could the second chick be hatching?
At 6:40 this evening the female osprey stood up to reveal what looks like a small hole in one of the eggs. We are very pleased to see the hatching process beginning as this egg is now in its 40th day of incubation, three days over the average for ospreys! Take a look at the small dark shape on the egg in the middle of the nest..
We are hoping to get a better view later on to confirm this exciting news. The species protection officers will be keeping a close eye on the nest overnight, and will post any further developments. At 4 days old the first chick is also doing well, having been fed by the female at least 7 times today.
