Scotland is a land of stories.

Stories of wildlife, wild land and wild weather. Whether it’s great journalism, a memorable poem or a personal tale, a story can move us in different ways.

In recognition of Scotland’s rich history of storytelling and to mark our 60th anniversary in 2024, we launched our Words of the Wild campaign as a celebration of these stories.

Below you can find links to our podcast and the shortlisted entries to our nature writing competition, both of which were part of the campaign.

Read the competition shortlist

Our shortlist consists of 24 inspiring and evocative stories about Scotland wildlife and wild places that were selected from over 500 entries to our Words of the Wild competition.

“Under me the central core of fire from which was thrust this grumbling grinding mass of plutonic rock, over me blue air, and between the fire of the rock and the fire of the sun, scree, soil and water, moss, grass, flower and tree, insect, bird and beast, wind, rain and snow – the total mountain.”
