Making a winter wreath is the perfect Christmas craft! It involves heading out on a winters walk to collect materials, getting creative with your design, and getting to hang it up and enjoy it over the festive period! There are lots of ways to make a wreath, but we have shown a super easy way of making one – which is great for kids!
What you will need:
- Natural materials collected outside
- Secateurs (to be used by an adult!)
- Piece of cardboard (around the size of a flattened cereal box)
- Pen, scissors and string
- Green paint and paintbrush
How to make your winter wreath:
- With an adult, head outside and carefully collect your foliage. Ask an adult to cut the branches for you with secateurs. We recommend cutting small branches to weave into your wreath, rather than singular leaves. It is a good idea to get a mixture of different species.
- We recommend you to only take a couple branches from each tree – we need to leave plenty for wildlife! And be careful with berries – they can add some nice colour to your design but can be dangerous to eat. It’s best to avoid them if you have younger siblings or any pets who might accidentally eat one.
- Next, draw a donut shape on your cardboard – one large circle with a smaller circle in the middle. Carefully using scissors, cut out the outer circle, followed by the inner circle. You may need an adult to help you here – especially if your cardboard is thick!
- Now that you have a cut-out cardboard donut (which is now your wreath!), it’s time to paint it green. You just need to colour one side. You can use colouring in pens if you prefer.
- Once your wreath is dry, tie string tightly around it several times, from the inner to the outer circle. This is where you will feed your greenery through!
- Start feeding your greenery through the string until your wreath is completely covered. You can keep adding until you are happy with it. It’s a good idea to add big green leaves first, and add any decorative bits (like branches with pinecones) last.
- Keep adding to your wreath until you are happy with it. You can use the string to hang your wreath up.
