Make a bat bookmark

Bats are nocturnal mammals, so you’re unlikely to see them during the day, but as you walk through woodlands you may pass a tree hollow that is harbouring a colony!

What you will need:

  • White paper
  • Black paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Pen/pencil
  • Ruler

How to make your bat bookmark:

Follow the instructions below and use the images to guide you.

  1. Using your ruler, draw a 10.5cm X 10.5cm square on your black paper and carefully cut it out.
  2. Take a corner of your square and fold it diagonally to the opposite corner. Crease well and unfold. Repeat with the other corner so you are left with two diagonal folds.
  3. Now fold the square into a triangle. Take the top of the triangle and fold the front piece of paper towards the bottom of the triangle – make sure your crease it well.
  4. Take the left corner of the triangle and fold it towards the bottom centre of the triangle. Repeat with the right corner. Then unfold both corners so you are left with the creases.
  5. Now take the left corner and fold it towards the top of the triangle to create a ‘flap’. Repeat with the right corner.
  6. Tuck both the left and right ‘flaps’ into the pocket. This is your bat’s body.
  7. On white paper, cut out two fangs and two circles for eyes. On black paper, cut out two wings – you can ask an adult to help with the tricky bits!
  8. Glue the fangs, eyes and wings on to your bat’s body – just like we have in the photo.
  9. Your bat bookmark is ready to take a bite at your favourite books and save your page!
