We've cancelled this evening opening due to the weather warnings from Storm Ashley. We will be closing at our usual 5pm instead.
We don't want our visitors and staff to be travelling in dangerous conditions, and it's unlikely the geese will be travelling in the dangerous conditions too! They tend to hunker down in fields overnight during storms, instead of coming back to their roosting sites.
During pink-footed goose season at Montrose Basin, the visitor centre will be open until 7pm for 2 weekends in October! (Sat 12th, Sun 13th, Sat 19th, Sun 20th). Our usual opening times are 10:30am-5pm, but for these weekends in mid-October we're extending this to help visitors see this wonderful sight, either from the centre, or from clear directions to other car parks around the reserve.
Come along to learn more about our tens of thousands of pink-footed geese, where and when you might see them best, and learn about this amazing spectacle from knowledgeable volunteers and members of staff.
Some years we get amazing views of the geese flying in right over the visitor centre to roost on the Basin, and other years they tend to fly in from other directions. We may see thousands from our windows during our late-opening evenings, or we may see very distant clouds of them through our telescopes. It's all down to a complicated combination of factors that only the pink-footed geese will ever fully understand...
Other exciting things we may see include: lots of different wading birds and ducks, kingfisher, peregrine, otters, and foxes.
