A walk around Deer Park and The Haining ponds

Join us for a walk to see what charity Bright Green Nature are doing to restore biodiversity at Deer Park.

The Deer Park is a stunning species-rich grassland site on the outskirts of Selkirk. Historically owned by The Haining to breed deer for hunting, it is now owned by local charity Bright Green Nature whose aim is to restore and maintain it for biodiversity. The walk will take us around the site, covering the different habitats that can be found there.

Firstly, we will explore the calcareous grassland sections on the south side, paying close attention to the masses of common rockrose (Helianthemum nummularium) that grow there, for sightings of the northern brown argus butterfly (Aricia artaxerxes). We will then visit the newly restored curling ponds where we will have a look at the flora and fauna that prefer the wetter habitats. Here we will also have an opportunity to view some of the moths that have been caught onsite overnight (weather permitting).

Our walk will then take us along the boundary with The Haining, where we should be able to see many different birds and butterflies, before we follow the path up to the top where we will be treated to some amazing views over The Haining and the Three Brethren. The Deer Park is steep and we don't have any maintained paths to follow so please make sure that you are dressed appropriately with sturdy footwear and clothing that is suitable for the weather conditions on the day. Bring binoculars if you have them.

Meet in the lay-by on the A7, south of Selkirk (https://w3w.co/producers.profited.finishers, grid reference NT 47690 27433). Please note the map pointer generated by eventbrite is based on a large area postcode, use the what3words or grid reference for an accurate location.
