Wave of public support for Marine Protected Areas in Scotland

Analysis published today reports that over 99% of respondents to a public consultation support the creation of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Scotland's seas.

A total of 14,703 responses were submitted to a Scottish Government consultation on proposals to create a network of MPAs, which included up to 33 new sites put forward for designation around Scottish coastlines. As well as support for the proposals, there was a strong response in favour of greater protection for whales, dolphins and seabirds with an increased focus on the recovery of marine species and habitats.

The Scottish Wildlife Trust Living Seas Policy Officer, Alex Kinninmonth, said: “This shows that an overwhelming majority are in favour of improved protection for marine life in Scottish seas.

“The Scottish Government must now listen to this clear message from the Scottish public and not only designate the proposed Marine Protected Areas  but put in place effective management that kick-starts the recovery of the Scottish marine environment.”
