Vote for Eigg in the Spirit of Scotland Awards

The Isle of Eigg, an eco-community supported by the Scottish Wildlife Trust through our role in the Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust, has now been nominated for a Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Environment Award.

In 2008, the Isle of Eigg fought off steep competition from 350 community groups and became one of 10 finalists in the Big Green Challenge; a NESTA lottery backed competition to award communities which reduce their CO2 emissions by as much as possible, in innovative ways, which engage their community, and can be replicated elsewhere.

In January 2010, all of Eigg’s hard work paid off as the Isle won joint first prize of £300,000.  The money will be used towards plans for a wood fuel business sympathetic to conservation needs; the installation of an additional 20kw of PV panels to augment Eigg Electric’s renewable energy system; and the building of an affordable, replicable, eco-property to house volunteers and students.

If you'd like to vote, or maybe suggest to a friend or two that they could, vote here now.

The Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Awards gives the public the opportunity to vote for the Scots who aim to exceed all expectations in their chosen fields and are pioneering new developments across Scotland's rich cultural spectrum.

And if you do vote, you might also win a prize too!  A luxury break for the winner and bottles of Glenfiddich Special Reserve for 20 runners up are all up for grabs.
