Video cameras focus in on wildlife at Montrose Basin

Newly installed video cameras are now up-and-running at the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Montrose Basin Wildlife Reserve and Visitor Centre, it was announced today (Monday 16 May).

The advancements have been made possible thanks to funders including Rural Tayside LEADER programme, Angus Environmental Trust, the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s North Angus and Dundee and Angus members’ centres’, and other members of the conservation charity.

To celebrate the success of the Wildlife in Focus project, staff at Montrose Basin plan to host an evening for invited local tourism bodies, hoteliers and bed & breakfast owners next Monday (23 May) to spread the word about the latest visitor centre attraction on offer in the Centre

Caroline Hendry, Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Montrose Basin Visitor Centre Manager, said:  “Visitors to the centre can now enjoy high quality and close-up images of a variety of wildlife found around the Basin from three new cameras.

“One of these cameras is pointed at our artificial sandbank, which provides great views of sand martins nesting and this same camera captures beautiful images of goldfinches feeding on the bird feeders.  Another covers the salt marsh to give close up views of wildfowl, including wigeon and teal in the saltpan pools. The third camera streams in high definition and is placed on the floating tern raft.  It provides amazing footage of the common terns nesting on the raft.

“Not only can the footage be enjoyed on big screens in the Visitor Centre, it can also be watched from the comfort of your own home thanks to a live feed on www.swt.org.uk.  We hope visitors come to see the amazing array of wildlife for themselves and then log in at home to follow their progress.  Watching terns during the breeding season live online is a fantastic opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts out there. The Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Montrose Basin Visitor Centre is open seven days a week at present from 10.30 am to 5 pm.
