Staff at the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Montrose Basin Wildlife Reserve and Visitor Centre are preparing to serve up Sunday breakfast with a difference this weekend (3 October) by inviting visitors to enjoy an early morning start in the company of around 50,000 pink-footed geese.
In the first of two such events, taking place on Sunday 3 October and Sunday 17 October, Montrose Basin’s ‘Goose Breakfast’ begins with a 6.30 am wake-up call, which sees visitors begin their day watching the spectacle of thousands of pink-footed geese leaving Montrose Basin at dawn. Guests then head back to the Visitor Centre for porridge and toast, followed by the option to enjoy a wildlife presentation from the Montrose Basin Ranger.
Caroline Hendry, Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Montrose Basin Visitor Centre Manager, said: “This is truly one of the most exciting wildlife spectacles you will see in the Angus area – to watch the morning take off of over 50,000 pink-footed geese at dawn against a pink sunrise really is a memorable sight.
“As our geese head to nearby fields to find their own breakfast, it seems only right that we treat our visitors to a hearty breakfast as well, and for those keen to know more about the wildlife of Montrose Basin our Ranger Adam McClure is primed to provide a presentation of this year’s highlights.
“Our ‘Goose Breakfasts’ are usually very popular events and we are putting on two this year to meet the expected levels of interest. Booking is essential and can be done by calling 01674 676336 or emailing montrosebasin@swt.org.uk. Those lucky enough to secure a space should wear stout outdoor shoes or boots and warm clothing, as well as bringing their own telescopes or binoculars. We will be meeting on the day at the Montrose Basin Visitor Centre, Rossie Braes, Montrose, DD10 9TA.”
