Good for teamwork and for Scotland’s environment

A team from construction firm Balfour Beatty has volunteered at the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Pease Dean reserve in the Borders.

The team of 7 arrived on site in glorious spring weather and were briefed by the Trust warden (Sam Purkis) on the tasks facing them. The volunteers got straight into path maintenance and fence building.

The fencing team were replacing an old wire fence with a brand new timber built construction, complete with a kissing gate. They were working with 4 other Scottish Wildlife Trust volunteers in glorious sunshine for most of the day.

The path building team joined 3 other regular Trust volunteers and worked to rebuild an existing path through the woodland which had become treacherous due to erosion. They removed old timberwork, installed new posts and then fitted edging timbers before re-levelling the path.

The Scottish Wildlife Trust relies on volunteers for so much of the vital work on our wildlife reserves. Thanks to volunteers, we can maintain access to these wildlife havens for thousands of visitors every year.

Thanks to Balfour Beatty for their hard work at Pease Dean. They described it as “a useful exercise in team work as well as a way for Balfour Beatty to give to the community.” If your company would like to volunteer with the Scottish Wildlife Trust, we’d love to hear from you.
