Fire, water and plenty of mud in new exhibition

An art show in Aberfeldy is featuring vessels inlaid with clay taken from the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Jupiter and Loch of the Lowes wildlife reserves.

‘Fire and Water’, at The Watermill Gallery in Aberfeldy, includes work by Fiona Byrne-Sutton, who recently created installations at Jupiter Urban Wildlife Centre in Grangemouth to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

In this exhibition, Fiona – along with 26 other ceramicists from The Scottish Potters Association – celebrates the process of working with clay through a mixture of pots, wall-hangings and sculptures.

Fiona Byrne-Sutton said:

“I am particularly excited by the vessels inlaid with clay from Loch of the Lowes, the Scottish Wildlife Trust reserve in Perthshire. This fires a beautiful deep brown.

“I sieved it multiple times till the clay sat in suspension and used this to make a fine clay slip called terra sgilliata, the method used by the ancient Romans and Greeks. One starts with a big bucket of the raw stuff and ends up with an amount the size of a bag of sugar.

“The reward is that it is so lovely to paint with – like cutting through butter.”

The exhibition runs until Tuesday 28 August at The Watermill, Mill Street, Aberfeldy, where there is also a bookshop and café.

For more information on the exhibition, visit the Aberfeldy Watermill website.
