Feathers are unique to birds and are essential to flight, but they can also give birds their colour and a waterproof jacket. They are made from a tough material called keratin and are designed to be light, flexible and strong. The shape gives birds control in the air and can help them to steer.
Feathers often fall off as they grow new ones which is good news for us. We can harness the power of flight by making a feather dart! This simple and quick activity is lots of fun and all you need is three feathers and a cork.
What you will need:
- 3 long feathers
- A cork
- A pointy pencil
How to make a feather dart:
- Use a pencil to make three holes in the middle of your cork.
- Push the feathers in tightly.
- Throw your dart (just be careful not to hit anything breakable!).
- Why not make up a game like catch or hit a target for points?
