An Unexpected Visitor
There has been no sign yet of a second osprey chick but we have had an unusual visitor on the nest. On Monday afternoon a curious squirrel took a few peeks into the osprey nest, before scuttling off at the sight of a large predator just a few feet away!
Ospreys don’t hunt red squirrels but they must look pretty scary!
The chick that hatched on Saturday afternoon has been doing well so far. The male (LM12) does not incubate anymore but has been bringing in three or four fish every day to feed the growing family.
The female (LF15) is very reluctant to leave the nest for more than a few seconds at a time. When a fish is delivered she will perch at the side of the nest, feeding herself and her young chick. The chick is growing quickly and already looks bigger and stronger than it did on Saturday.
We are expecting the second chick to hatch any day now – stay tuned for further developments!
