Trust event in Irvine to mark National Tree Week

The Trust is kicking off National Tree Week by holding a special tree planting event at their Shewalton Wood wildlife reserve in Irvine on Saturday 28 November.

Shewalton Wood is a large area of woodland, grassland and wetland accessible from a path circuit five kilometres in length.  It is a great place to see all kind of wildlife, particularly deer, amphibians and birds of prey.  Broad-leaved woodland is expanding naturally over parts of the site but the Trust is keen to accelerate this process by planting thickets of alder, willow and aspen.

Running from 10.00-15.00, this is a fantastic chance for people with all levels of experience to get involved in practical conservation in their local community. The event will increase the number of tree species as well as provide woodland cover for our native wildlife.
First launched in 1975, National Tree Week is the UK's largest tree celebration annually launching the start of the winter tree planting season. This a great chance for people to do something positive for their local treescape.

The Scottish Wildlife Trust Ayrshire Community Engagement Officer, Harry Richards, said: “National Tree Week is the perfect opportunity for people to be a part of the actual planting in their local area. The Scottish Wildlife Trust hopes they will feel attached to the new woodland as it grows and matures.

“Folk with all levels of experience are welcome to join in, all the tools will be provided and training will be given on the day. Just make sure to wear warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear. You can stay for as long as you want, from minutes to all day – just make sure to pack a lunch if you’re planning on staying for a while.”

The meeting place is the car park at Shewalton Wood wildlife reserve (grid reference NS337356).  There will be direction signs from the Oldhall roundabout on the day.  For more information, contact Harry Richards on hrichards@scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk or 07785 468601.  It would be useful for him to know if you plan on bringing a group along.
