The Scottish Wildlife Trust has today called for the planning system to be well resourced so that Scotland’s natural environment is given a high priority in planning decisions. Scotland’s prosperity depends on the environment and the ecosystem services it provides, such as food, water and protection against floods and drought. The Trust believes these factors should be placed on an equal footing with economic and social considerations in our planning system.
Dr. Maggie Keegan, Scottish Wildlife Trust’s National Planning Co-ordinator said:
“Scotland’s prosperity and peoples' wellbeing are dependent on having a healthy environment. So it’s essential that any changes to planning law take account of the effects that planning decisions may have on the environment. By responding to the Scottish Government’s consultations on amendments to the modernised planning system we made sure that the environment is right up there with economic and social considerations.”
