The Wildlife Proclamation 2011

The Scottish Parliament Election on 5th May 2011.

The Scottish Wildlife Trust has joined forces with 9 other Scottish wildlife conservation organisations to together a Wildlife Proclamation for the Scottish Parliament election on 5 May 2011.  This aims to raise the profile of nature conservation amongst candidates for the Scottish Parliament and to identify potential wildlife champions that we can work with, if they are elected, to make Scotland a better place for wildlife.
The proclamation website http://www.wildlifeproclamation2011.org.uk/ shows the candidates that we have contacted and those that have signed the proclamation. You can search by name, constituency or postcode to find out which of your candidates have pledged to work for wildlife.

The Proclamation
The candidates we contacted were encouraged to sign a proclamation to do all they can, if elected, to help stop and reverse the loss of wildlife. The proclamation reads:
I pledge that if I am elected, I will endeavour to retain the colour, variety and vitality of Scotland by conserving wildlife and restoring habitats.
I fully support the following statements:
1. Scotland's wildlife and landscape defines who we, the people of Scotland, are.
2. Investing in the conservation of our wildlife today secures a sustainable environment on which our cultural and economic future depends.
3. Conserving wildlife is an effective way to build Scotland's resilience to climate change.
4. Parliament should scrutinise the delivery of wildlife conservation to ensure its success.

Tony King, the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Head of Policy, said “In such a tight election as this, Scottish Wildlife Trust members could make all the difference to the final result and the political parties know this.  Let’s make sure that the next Scottish Parliament and government deliver for wildlife.   It is important that our voice is heard and I would urge every member to ask candidates in their area to sign the proclamation and, if they won’t sign up, to explain why not.”
