Stephen Jardine goes wild for our charity this New Year

Stephen JardineWe are delighted to announce that Stephen Jardine, one of the most recognised faces on TV, is now a celebrity ambassador for the Scottish Wildlife Trust.

Currently he can be seen on TV sets across the nation presenting The Hour, the most watched teatime show in Scotland.  He also saw in the new year in Scotland as the co-host of STV’s Hogmanay, and this new year Stephen Jardine is going wild with us.

Speaking about his new role, Mr Jardine explained how he hopes Scots across the country will follow his lead and make a new year’s resolution to support the Scottish Wildlife Trust and help our charity do even more to protect Scotland’s wildlife.

Mr Jardine said:  “We are all merely temporary custodians of the amazing Scottish countryside, and we can all play a part in protecting our wildlife for the future.  If decisive action isn’t taken now to care for our natural environment, its biodiversity will continue to diminish and precious parts of our native wildlife could be lost.

“That’s why I'm delighted to support the work of the Scottish Wildlife Trust and their excellent work preserving our natural environment for future generations. From bringing back the beaver and protecting red squirrels to watching over osprey and peregrines and maintaining over 120 wildlife reserves across Scotland as places where our wildlife can thrive, this charity makes a real difference to Scotland’s environment – for the benefit of people and wildlife.

“Earlier this year I was lucky enough to spot my first otter in a forest in Galloway. That precious moment made me realise the wealth of our surroundings and I'd like to do whatever I can to ensure it is protected and enhanced.”

Simon Milne, the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Chief Executive, said:  “It’s fantastic to welcome Stephen Jardine, known as one of Scotland’s most recognised celebrities, as a supporter of the Scottish Wildlife Trust.

“Stephen’s personal experiences of the outdoors and his appreciation of wildlife will be great assets to us, and his support helps us promote our wonderful wildlife and wild places, spread the news of our work, and perhaps persuade others to support us too by becoming a member of our charity.”

Stephen Jardine started his career in local radio, before joining STV as an on-screen reporter. He then became GMTV’s Scotland Correspondent and then Europe Correspondent, based in Paris. He also worked in London as a Correspondent and presented the “Newshour” section of the programme. In 2000, Stephen returned to STV to present a wide range of programmes.  Today, he presents the live daily teatime entertainment and features show ‘The Hour’ and will host STV’s televised Hogmanay celebrations this year (2010-11).

Stephen Jardine joins an exclusive group of other Scottish celebrities who are already backing the work of the Scottish Wildlife Trust, including cyclist Mark Beaumont, who was named ‘Top Scot’ 2010 at the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Awards, and John Michie.
