Postcode prizes at Parliament

Charities from across Scotland gathered on Wednesday evening (3rd February 2010) at a charity gala hosted by People’s Postcode Lottery held in the Scottish Parliament.  The event gathered together charity representatives and MSP’s as the People’s Postcode Lottery awarded their charity partners with a cheque for £2,906,296 – the total amount raised for charities in Scotland in 2009 by the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.

Patricia Ferguson MSP welcomed the guests to the garden lobby of the Scottish Parliament, where charity partners CHILDREN 1ST received a cheque for £496,769, Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres were given £553,324, Missing People (In Scotland) received £380,173 and Scottish Wildlife Trust were presented with a cheque for £441,444.  Newly created charity People’s Postcode Trust were given £1,034,586, to allow the trust to continue funding charities and projects, in addition to the 142 it has already funded in Scotland. In total, the People’s Postcode Lottery has awarded over £4million to charities and community initiatives in Scotland, since its launch in January 2008.

Country Director Annemiek Hoogenboom said “It is truly fantastic that the People’s Postcode Lottery has been able to give these fantastic charities such high levels of funding.  And it is all because of the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.  40p from each ticket goes directly to charity, and because more and more people are getting involved with the People’s Postcode Lottery, we are able to keep increasing the amount of funding we can give to the charity partners”.

Representatives from 6 of the Trust projects funded by the People’s Postcode Trust attended the event last night, allowing guests to see some of the projects that have been funded.  “The creation of the People’s Postcode Trust has allowed 142 charities and community initiatives in Scotland to proceed with innovative ventures, many of which are beneficial to our environment – an aspect we are particularly keen on providing funding for.”, Annemiek added.

NOTES TO EDITORS
About the People's Postcode Lottery
People's Postcode Lottery is the lottery for local charities throughout the UK. We are not a lotto but a society lottery and our mission is to raise funds for charities and to increase awareness for their work by organising lotteries.
Launched online in 2005, PPL represents a unique fundraising concept where players play with their postcode to win cash prizes whilst supporting local UK charities. 40p from each ticket sold goes direct to charity. All money raised in the individual country (tickets are available in England, Scotland or Wales) stays in the individual country.
On the 16th November the People's Postcode Lottery expanded its distribution across the retail network. The roll out will be supported with a UK wide advertising campaign across TV and radio.
How to play
Players purchase a £2 lottery ticket, which enters them into the weekly draw. Tickets are based on a player's postcode and a 3-digit unique code. Each ticket in the winning postcode receives a share of the £30,000 and each ticket in the winning postcode sector receives part of £5,000. People can either sign up to a monthly direct debit or buy their tickets in their local participating epay retailer from 16th November 2009. Winnings are either transferred direct to their bank account or, if under £50 can be claimed from the retailer who sold the ticket.
People's Postcode Lottery held their first ever Big Postcode Rollover on December 6th 2009, with G73 1 winning £1.9 Million – the biggest ever prize pot to date. Players can check winning postcodes each week by visiting http://www.winningpostcode.com/ <http://www.winningpostcode.com/>
People's Postcode Lottery Charity Partners
Since January 2008, the People's Postcode Lottery has raised £4 Million in Scotland for local charities including Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres, CHILDREN 1ST, the Scottish Wildlife Trust, Missing People (in Scotland) and new charity partner the People's Postcode Trust.
We believe the charities are the experts in investing our financial support. Therefore the support we give is unrestricted and our direct beneficiaries can invest where it is truly needed. For instance support given to each charity so far equates to supporting three Maggie's centre for an entire year, supporting three CHILDREN 1ST services for a year and maintaining the Scottish Wildlife Trust's network of over 120 reserves across Scotland.
Lottery Regulation
The People's Postcode Lottery is regulated by the Gambling Commission and has External Lottery Manager's Licence to operate in the Great Britain. Tickets are not available in Northern Ireland.
Novamedia and the Postcode Lottery
The Postcode Lottery was founded in 1989 by Novamedia BV, an international charity lottery operator. Novamedia operates Postcode Lotteries in the Netherlands, in Sweden and the UK (North East) with over 4.3 million players each week.
