The First Minister today (09 February 2024) gave details of The Scottish Government’s plans for distributing farm funding with the plan being to give 70% of the budget to farmers as “direct payments”. As we understand the proposals this means only slightly more money than previously will be going to help farmers deliver on climate and nature friendly farming. This statement falls short of the urgency and ambition we need for transition to climate and nature positive practices.

Simply put the agricultural proposals put forward are out of step with wider Government stated aims, ambition and targets.

As we navigate increasing environmental challenges, it is obvious that the future success of Scottish agriculture hinges on the health of the natural environment. Supporting farmers in embracing sustainable methods is not just a matter of agricultural policy; it is essential to safeguard our food security and the long-term health, prosperity and wellbeing of Scotland’s communities.

There are very real threats to farmers and their livelihoods from climate change and biodiversity loss. We need urgent action to mitigate the potentially catastrophic consequences of business as usual. By prioritising the adoption of climate and nature-positive practices, we not only support our agricultural sector but ensure a strong foundation for our food systems that rely on a stable climate and healthy environment. It is important that policymakers, stakeholders, and society as a whole rally behind farmers and crofters that champion climate and nature-friendly practices and support many others who are seeking support to make that change. We need to remember that the well-being of farmers and ecosystems are mutually intertwined and must be safeguarded. It is crucial that Scottish Government increases the pace of change in transition towards climate and nature-positive practices.
