Bryophytes of the Scottish Borders and beyond

Join us to hear David Long, Chair of the Scottish Wildlife Trust Berwickshire Group, talk about bryophytes.

David is a Research Associate at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, where he was part of the research team working on the Flora of Bhutan and latterly on Bryophytes. He is a former President of the British Bryological Society and is active in bryophyte surveying in Scotland and other countries including China, Bhutan and Nepal.

The talk covers the history of bryophyte recording in the Scottish Borders, what bryophytes are, their importance, practicalities of study, and highlights characteristic species in key Borders habitats, before moving on to Arctic bryophytes in the Cairngorms, Atlantic species in our western rainforests, Hebridean species on St Kilda and recent research on Scottish Liverwort Heath and the genus Herbertus - the Prongworts. It concludes with thoughts on conservation of bryophytes.

Meet at Volunteer Hall, Langtongate, Duns TD11 3AF.
