Introducing the New Visitor Centre Assistant

Hello,

My name is Euan and I started working as a Visitor Centre Assistant at Loch of the Lowes in August. I’m working here on a one year placement via Community Job Scotland. I wanted to work at Loch of the Lowes because of my love of local wildlife, coming from Birnam myself. My favourite animal at Loch of the Lowes would have to be the mandarin duck due to is vibrant colours and regal presence. However, the first time I spotted one here at the loch, I was not familiar with the eclipse plumage and couldn’t recognize it as its colours were significantly muted; I still have a lot to learn.

I only caught glimpses of the ospreys for a short while before they left for West Africa due to their need to migrate. I’m looking forward to seeing them and becoming more acquainted with the raptors in general when springtime comes. It’s enjoyable engaging with visitors and feeling the uplifting energy when a red squirrel is spotted, especially by those who have traveled far just to see one. Going to the hides and looking out onto the serene loch with a crisp, autumn sky above it all is very relaxing.

I’m looking forward to meeting visitors throughout the season and learning more about the local wildlife. I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn as I work, especially in such a beautiful place.

Thanks for reading,

Euan
