World Wetlands Day – Free Entry At Montrose Basin

To celebrate World Wetlands Day this year, we're opening the Montrose Basin Visitor Centre for a free entry day on Thursday 2nd February! We'll be open 10:30am-4pm. There will be a morning session led by representatives from Angus Council Environment and Climate Change Team with discussion on the Saltmarsh Restoration Project with Q&A, between 10:30am and 12:30pm.

No booking required.

Why not come along and try our brand new telescopes, and hopefully spot a kingfisher?

We're opening specially on 2nd Feb for the occasion. Normal winter opening hours: Fri-Mon, 10:30am-4pm. We're returning to our daily opening hours, 10:30am-5pm, from Monday 13th Feb.

World Wetlands Day is celebrated each year on 2 February to raise awareness about wetlands. This day also marks the anniversary of the Convention on Wetlands, which was adopted as an international treaty in 1971.

This year's World Wetlands Day theme is Wetland Restoration, something that we've just had done at Montrose Basin. The SSSI transition saltmarsh beside the visitor centre was recently worked on thanks to funding from the Angus Council. The saltpans have been re-excavated, allowing for more biodiversity with species like wigeon, teal, kingfisher, grey heron, little egret, and common snipe benefiting from the marshier habitat.
