Trust backs alternative to GDP ahead of debate

The Scottish Wildlife Trust has thrown its support behind Oxfam’s Humankind Index, an alternative to Gross Domestic Product which reflects a true measure of Scotland's prosperity.

The Trust believes that indicators such as the quality of outdoor space and the accessibility of nature should be taken into account when assessing the nation’s wealth.

Speaking ahead of a debate on Oxfam’s Humankind Index in the Scottish Parliament this afternoon, Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Dr Maggie Keegan said:

“Access to high quality greenspace is essential for physical activity, positive mental well-being and healthy childhood development.

“People’s access to greenspace and the quality of their environment on their doorstep should be measured and given the prominence it deserves. Politicians need to know that most Scots think that their personal wellbeing and local environment are far more important than wider economic factors.

“Scotland’s natural environment provides vital services like clean water, improved air quality and recreational facilities. Our true prosperity depends on protecting these services for the future.

“Scotland needs to recognise that a healthy environment is an absolute requirement for the good health of our economy.”
