Improvements coming to Luggiebank Wood

The Trust has received funding from Viridor Credits Environmental Company, through the Scottish Landfill Communities Fund, to make Luggiebank Wood Wildlife Reserve a better place for people and wildlife.

As a result of the £43,981 award the Trust will be able to carry out work including an upgrade of the paths through the wood, installing new gates and information boards, and creating a new wildlife pond. The new gates are designed to allow horse riders and cyclists to access the reserve while deterring motorbike riders.

Reserves Manager Duncan Clark said: “The reserve is popular with the community and well used by the local primary school. However, over time the paths have become really worn in places and they are often waterlogged.

“We have also suffered from some anti-social behaviour including people accessing the wood on motoribikes, which is a nuisance to other visitors, causes damage and is ultimately very dangerous in a shared space.”

“Support from Viridor Credits will help us to improve the condition of the path and allow people to enjoy this special woodland, learn about wildlife that lives here, and discover more of the amazing wild places that we have in the town.”

Luggiebank Wood Wildlife Reserve is a peaceful woodland haven for wildlife close to the Luggie Water and the centre of Cumbernauld. It is home to a rich variety of species including kingfishers and bats.

The reserve is part of Cumbernauld Living Landscape, which aims to enhance, restore and reconnect green areas of the town.

Living Landscapes Programme Manager Ian Mackenzie said: “Cumbernauld is such a great place to live and work because of the network of woods and wild places. It’s great to see continued investment in the town’s green spaces, which will mean that everyone can easily access the nature on their doorstep.”

Gareth Williams, Operations Manager at Viridor Credits, said: “Access to nature is an important factor for personal well-being and is a major aim of Viridor Credits. Preserving and protecting our wild spaces is of vital importance for both nature and people, and we are delighted to support Scottish Wildlife Trust to meet this aim.”
