Title: People and Wildlife Officer 

Status: Fixed Term, 12 months (35 hours a week)

Salary: circa £22,000

Location: Harbourside House, Leith (flexible)

The Trust successfully champions the cause of wildlife through policy and campaigning work, demonstrates best practice through practical conservation and innovative partnerships, and inspires people to take positive action through its education and engagement activities. The Trust manages a network of 120 wildlife reserves across Scotland and is a member of the UK-wide Wildlife Trusts movement.

The Role:

An opportunity has arisen within this busy team for a dynamic and motivated People and Wildlife Officer for a fixed term of 12 months.

The People and Wildlife Team leads on and provides key support to a wide range of the Trust’s activities, from promotion and management of Scottish Wildlife Watch to volunteer management and recruitment, and includes delivery of an annual programme of community related events in order to create opportunities for people from all walks of life to connect with wildlife in Scotland.

The successful candidate will support the People and Wildlife Manager in producing and delivering aspects of the Trust’s community engagement programme, manage and promote the Scottish Wildlife Watch programme, co-ordinate and assist with the production and distribution of Watch resources and organise a busy programme of public events. The candidate will also support and mobilise the Trust’s Young Leaders’ Network.

Main responsibilities include: 

  • To ensure that all Trust registered Wildlife Watch Groups are managed in accordance with National Wildlife Watch Guidelines and best practice, including registration and training of Wildlife Watch leaders and Child Safety and Welfare checks.
  • To assist with the promotion of the Wildlife Watch programme and co-ordinate and assist with the production and distribution of all Watch resources.
  • To assist in the production of the quarterly Wildlife Watch Scotland magazine.
  • To represent Scottish Wildlife Watch through The Wildlife Trusts UK networking and training events.
  • To support the development and delivery of education and community engagement content for the Trust’s major projects.

Our successful candidate will: 

  • Be educated to 5 Highers (C Grade and above) or HNC/HND level.
  • Have strong communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Have excellent customer care with a diplomatic approach.
  • Have strong organisational skills and an ability to enthuse and engage with all ages.
  • Have a full driving licence, ideally applicants should have experience of working in the voluntary sector and some wildlife knowledge.

Please note: this post will involve some travel, overnight absences and weekend/evening work.
