Trees at Sunrise © Billy Cook

“As a nature lover I’ve always admired and valued trees and woodlands. Everything from the statuesque form of a tree trunk, to the fresh atmosphere in woodlands after a heavy summer downpour, are all elements I enjoy. It has always intrigued me that as ground dwellers, we only really see the bottom of trees and maybe as a result we sometimes lose perspective of how big they really are. After all, they are some of the biggest living things around us!

Working at the Falls of Clyde as Seasonal Ranger meant every day I could mingle in the woods. An abundance of wet days didn’t even take the edge off my appreciation of a glistening fresh woodland! As part of my work I also had the opportunity to learn a bit more about trees: how to identify our more common species, the habitats they create and the folklore that surrounds them. Whether it’s conservation, economics, history, or myths and legend, they seem to have a part to play. They really are treemendous!”
