News: Wonderful woodland wildflowers at Jupiter

31st August 2011

The Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Jupiter Urban Wildlife Centre in Grangemouth will be taking part in the International Year of Forests with a Wonderful Woodland Wildflower Planting day on Saturday 3 September. Events are taking place across the world this year to celebrate the wonders of forests and their conservation. And you do not need to head off to the tropical rainforest, there are great woodlands near you!

Willing volunteers of all ages are invited to come along to plant wildflowers from 2-4pm on Saturday 3 September. The project has been funded by Forestry Commission Scotland as part of their role in promoting the International Year of Forests.

Scottish Wildlife Trust Ranger at Jupiter, Stephen Owen said:

“Forestry Commission Scotland have generously supported us, so people at Jupiter can plant one of hundreds of woodland wildflowers. These plants, such as primroses and bugle, are not only very beautiful, but are very important to wildlife, such as bumblebees and butterflies.  With so many wildflowers to be planted, we are going to need as much help as we can get. This is a great chance to get out into nature while helping to make a woodland near you better for biodiversity.”

If you would like to help, please contact the Jupiter Rangers, on 013245 486 475 (mobile 07739 428203), or email jupiterranger@swt.org.uk. All tools and work gloves will be provided, as will tea, juice and biscuits for tired, hungry planters. Remember to dress for the weather. Those taking part should arrive at the start of the event to make the most of the afternoon.
