Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire

Welcome!

Thank you for visiting our page. If you enjoy social media, hop on over to our Facebook site to read about upcoming events, local consultations and other wildlife related issues. Our local branch members are spread across a large area of the northeast and we are fortunate to have a diverse range of local nature reserves located in our region.

What we do

We are a friendly, active group with the key aim of raising awareness of biodiversity. We organise a variety of nature conservation activities and events including walks, talks, hands on volunteering and community-based skills workshops.

Sign up to our mailing list to receive updates from this local group.

GROUP MEETINGS

Where and when?

Where we meet

We organise walks and talks throughout the year. Some talks are held online but for in person events we vary the venue to give members from across our vast patch (Laurencekirk to Banff!) the opportunity to come along. We have four Trust nature reserves in our area, including Gight Wood and Longhaven, and a newly set up tree nursery growing on trees for Gight.

AGM and next talk

Our AGM will be held via Zoom on Thursday 25th April. This is a great opportunity to meet the committee and find out about the last (and next!) 12 months. After the talk, we will hear from Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels. Please register on Eventbrite to reserve your spot for the AGM and talk. We look forward to seeing our local group members then!

Next volunteering session

This weekend we will be getting our lovely wildlife patch at Tullich ready for spring and the coming season. There are still spaces on April 13th to carry out hands on maintenance work at Tullich Kirkyard. Please register on Eventbrite.

Tree nursery diary – Tree log #10

Grand Theft Acorns

SWT 0 – Small mammals 1

A batch of precious Gight acorns has been raided by small mammals. The perpetrators attacked under cover of darkness, forced their way through the safety barriers, removed all gems and disappeared into the night. The chances of recovering the loot are zero to none. The curator has vowed to deploy laser beams next year.

Background

In 2023 our group received funding from the JTPB fund for our ‘Ranging for Nature’ project. Our three core areas are:

  • Establish a tree nursery to re-stock Gight, ensuring a healthy woodland for the future
  • Provide community groups with the skills and equipment needed to realise or enhance their green project
  • Work with local groups and schools to inspire and enthuse people, young and old, about our amazing wildlife
